I dont like the Rat, but in all fairness, he was probably forced into conscription. Heidegger, on the other hand, took part in getting Jews fired when he was rector at Freiburg(???) and, as far as I know, never did even try to apologize. I dont know if this latter fact is something that should be appreciated (as being at least honest) or despicable.
