US film star and activist Jane Fonda has been spat at by a man who said he was a Vietnam veteran.
The 67-year-old actress was in Kansas City as part of a book- signing tour for her new autobiography when it happened.
Police said the man queued for 90 minutes before spitting a "large amount" of tobacco juice into her face.
Earlier this month, Fonda said she regretted a visit she made to a North Vietnamese gun site during the war, earning her the nickname "Hanoi Jane".
Disorderly conduct Kansas City Police said Michael Smit, 54, spat in Fonda's face and called her a traitor for making the 1972 trip to Hanoi to oppose the Vietnam war.
The actress caused an outcry in the US when she was pictured laughing as she sat on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft tank, which was used to shoot down American pilots.
In her newly released autobiography, entitled My Life So Far, she addresses her position as a polarizing figure for many Vietnam veterans.
And in a recent television interview, Fonda said the trip was the "largest lapse of judgment that I can even imagine", adding the incident had been a "betrayal".
Mr Smith was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, after the alleged incident on Wednesday, and is due to appear in court on 27 May. <...>
