Blood for Oil? By Retort, a Bay Area "situationist" group. About half-way, it tackles the question of Peak Oil, which it pretty much dismisses as "Malthusian" fantasy, pointing to "the vast resources of the new West African 'Gulf States', the deep-water fields now under exploitation in Mexico and Brazil, the Canadian tar sands, the emergence of Russia as an oil superpower, and the scramble, chaotic and violent, in the Caspian". Amazing amount of ignorance in just one sentence. The field off Mexico has been revealed to be half as large as thought, as admitted by Pemex (email last week). The Canadian tar sands require huge amounts of energy and huge amounts of water, more than Canada can afford (and Retort's assertion if the exploitation of the sands can be made more efficient, Canada could exceeed Saudi Arabia in reserves, reminds me of the quip "If my grandma had wings, she could fly"). Russian energy officials are admitting that their production is peaking. Africa's resources exist, yet are anything but "vast", in the sense Retort uses. And the Caspian has been revealed to be way overblown. This is yet another sign of what i see as creeping dementia in the American ultra-left. This is after all the same Retort group which a year ago celebrated 9/11 as an attack on the empire and the dominant spectacle from the outside, a proof that such an attack can still be mounted.
