L.A. TIMES August 4, 2005, letters to the editor:

They have little faith in 'intelligent design'

August 4, 2005

It seems that " 'Intelligent Design' Gets Bush's Nod" (Aug. 2). This is the theory that the world was created by an "intelligent designer," i.e., God. Mark Twain is credited with saying that "the devil created the world the second God wasn't looking." I wonder if our fundamentalist friends would approve of the teaching of the demonic design theory?

KEVIN B. POWELL, Long Beach • Intelligent design is a matter of faith, not a matter of science. Therefore, it belongs squarely taught in religious education classes, not in science or other academic classes (save historical or cultural studies) taught in public schools.

It is not that there is anything wrong with an individual holding the belief that a divine creator was responsible for the Earth, the universe or creation. However, every culture and faith has its own beliefs about creation. Consequently, it is something best left to religious educators, not public school educators. President Bush's suggestion that it be taught in public schools is one more example of the extreme right's attempt to create a Taliban-like society — American style.

ELIZABETH BROYLES, Claremont • Re "Inspiration for Doubters of Darwin," Aug. 3

So President Bush wants to give students a choice between biological Darwinism and a cockamamie theory like "intelligent design." Does that mean that his government will present alternatives to its social Darwinism?
