Looked to me like he had to find a way out of answering a question 
regarding his editorial, something he apparently had been asked by 
his producer to do.

No. Look at it again and then ask yourself, is this his way of 
finding an opportunity to weasel out of the question and still keep 
his job?

Oh yeah. Novak is definitely getting worried abut when he's going to 
have to say what he knows and he's feeling the walls closing in. 
This was what you call "a close one"
