Second, having a state health care system rather than a national one is problematic. For example, will patients needing very expensive care move to Oregon?

End Poverty in California, Socialist Upton Sinclair candidate for Gov. confronted these "welfare magnet, " arguments, about tons of Okies invading.

Point taken. I don't think we would have gotten tons of expensive patients "invading", but it still would have been a real problem. We have terrible trouble with political support for taxes in Oregon, and this kind of thing help the anti-tax crusaders. I guess this goes back to what Doug just posted about the conflict between social democracy and freedom of movement. Does anyone have any ideas about how this conflict should be handled? Should we just figure that the United States is a rich country and can handle the burden?
