WHAT WE STAND FOR Riders and Workers, Together! We have the same interests.

Expand Public Transit. No layoffs! No service cuts! Prioritize service expansion for communities who depend most on public transit. Remedy inequalities in service.

Public Transit Should be Free. Reduce fares. No fare hikes, ever!

The City is Not Poor! Increase taxes on big businesses and private transportation to provide all necessary money.

How It Works

The key to a social strike is that it involves riders and workers -- acting in concert. Starting September 1st, riders don't pay to ride and drivers (or station agents) don't ask for fares. Other than that, MUNI will operate as it normally does. Our strike will last until MUNI satisfies our demands by repealing the fare hike and reversing all service cuts and layoffs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What about the service cuts? Who will they affect?

A: You! Everyone! Working people, students, parents, all have busy lives. Every 15-30 minutes that the "revised" MUNI schedules add on to our commute times is time that could be spent earning money at our jobs, with our families, or doing other things that we feel are important.

In addition, the service cuts will make the buses even more crowded than they already are. Elderly and disabled folks are already losing access to MUNI because of experimental schedules and crowded buses. A permanent service cut will only make it near impossible on these folks to get around. This amounts to discrimination on the MTA's part against the elderly and the disabled.

Get Involved!

* Forward this announcement to everyone you know. * We need help putting up posters and stickers. You can download and print them yourself or you can contact us and we will get them to you. Put them up around MUNI stops and the transit system. Send us an email if you want to help so we can coordinate. * Teams of people are handing out leaflets and talking to people in the MUNI system. If you can help out with this effort, contact us (see below). * Often, we set up tables at important transit points to inform people about the strike. Send us an email if you would like to coordinate a table or help staff one! * Do you work with or belong to a community group? If you want to discuss the fare strike at your meeting(s), encourage members to help distribute fare strike info in your community, endorse the fare strike, translate publicity materials, or issue a statement in support: please contact us at outreach at socialstrike.net.
