Me: We're talking 1992-1994 here -- the economy was still pretty Soviet as far as employment policy was concerned (Peter may correct me if I'm wrong). Not many jobs got destroyed, though there was the problem of wage arrears.

Hard to describe the Yeltsin era as "neoliberalism." Russia's economy qua % of GDP is mostly based on natural-resource-extraction and -processing industries, which are men-heavy. I don't know about percentage of the workforce in that sector however.

Yes, I think this was a big factor. AFAIK, in fact, in Soviet days, while men were required by law to work, then was not true of married women, who could become full-time housewives. (Women were paid less than men, too.)

This was also a big factor, I think, esp. because of the alcohol factor.
