The surface politeness of British society aside -- and that surface politeness has eroded over the decades -- racialism in Britain is hardly "lingering". A lot of what I read, from left or right commentators, is dripping with an implicit racialism -- for all the historical disdain for the Irish, there was nothing in the period of high IRA activity that compares with what's being written now. Hate to say it, but it's almost in the DNA of the society, an inheritance of the century and more of colonial rule.
Mark that the poor Brazilian chap got it because he was dark-skinned and had Mongolian eyes! What a pisser -- no pun intended for the guy who had to go take a leak and couldn't set them right on old slanty.
