I imagine it works a bit differently -- but in principle it makes a lot of sense. Much of the misery, almost all of the sleeplessness, and even some of the anxiety of depression revolves around quite pointless memories that one compulsively digs up. Probably one of the factors in the temporary alleviation given by exercise is that it generates static to drown out the memories.
And if a therapist can help erase memories, she's worth every bit of $150 an hour, and more.
