Vietnam's farm product export surges in first 7 months

Vietnam obtained farm and forestry product export turnovers of 3.2 billion US dollars in the first 7 months of this year, rising 30.4 percent over the same period last year.

The growth is mainly attributed to rising demand for the products and increasing prices of such commodities as rice, rubber and woodwork in the world market, according to the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Monday.

The items recording high export growth in the period included woodwork, increasing 47.8 percent to 843 million dollars; vegetables and fruits, up 40.6 percent to 138 million dollars; rice, up 35.9 percent to 869 million dollars; and cashew nuts, up 19.5 percent to 244 million dollars.

Meanwhile, export of coffee, tea and pepper respectively decreased 22.3 percent, 30.1 percent and 14 percent in volume and 9.8 percent, 21.2 percent and 12.3 percent value.

To export more farm and forestry products, Vietnam is focusing on building brands, registering product trademarks, improving quality, exploiting traditional markets such as China, the United States, Japan, and the European Union, and seeking new ones.

The country has targeted to export 4.5 billion dollars worth of agriculture and forestry products in 2005, a year-on-year rise of 4.7 percent. Its export value from the products soared 31 percent to 4.3 billion dollars last year.
