To me, there's a multi-layered irony here. Just a few of the dynamics:

The Maoist dream of autarchy never approached producing the goods
available at a Wal-mart store.

Capitalists first promoted China as a market, but in fact they became
a huge supplier.

Americans decried China for its authoritarian centralism, then
utilized it for its authoritarian ability to keep wages down.

Wal-mart is the world leader in centralized distribution technology.
