Japan to fund 23 million USD for Viet Nam's poverty reduction
VNECONOMY updated: 01/12/2005
The Japanese government will provide a credit of 2.5 billion JPY (23 million USD) for Viet Nam's hunger elimination and poverty reduction strategy and reform programmes, thus creating conditions for Viet Nam to boost socio-economic development.
The pledge was signed by the Minister of Planning and Investment, Vo Hong Phuc, and the Japanese Ambassador, Norio Hattori, in Ha Noi on November 30.
The fund, which is part of the fourth poverty reduction supporting credit programme hosted by the World Bank (WB), will be transferred to the State Bank to finance Viet Nam's institutional reform and improvement and poverty alleviation programmes, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
Japan has been Viet Nam's largest official development assistance (ODA) supplier since 1992, said the ministry. Its accumulated ODA for Viet Nam since that year is 10.2 billion USD, including both non-refundable assistance capital and preferential credit.
