IAS News 013 :: December 2005 Newsletter of the Institute for Anarchist Studies

In this Issue: 1 Welcome 2 Please Donate to the IAS 3 Thank You IAS Donors! 4 IAS Grants for Radical Writers: The Deadline is Soon 5 Renewing the Anarchist Tradition 2006 6 RAT 2005 Audio 7 Subscribing to Perspectives on Anarchist Theory ----------------------------------------------------------- Welcome ----------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the last IAS E-newsletter of 2005.

December dispatches are usually spaces for roundups of the best and the worst of the year gone by, for countdowns, and sugar-coated nostalgia. You won't find much of that in this e-newsletter. With a tumultuous year full of change and transition behind us, we at the IAS are looking squarely ahead: to a rapidly approaching application deadline for the winter round of grants to radical writers and translators, to a spring issue of Perspectives on Anarchist Theory, and to RAT 2006!

In order to continue moving forward--contributing, however modestly, to the development of a contemporary anarchism able to confront, trash, and transform the systems of domination and oppression that stratify the globe--the IAS needs your support. Below you will find an appeal for the IAS's 2005 fund-raising campaign. Whether you have donated in the past or are thinking about donating for the first time this year, know that your contribution is greatly appreciated, no matter how large or small. If you are able, please take the time to contribute over the coming weeks in order to help us meet our fund-raising goal by the end of January 2006. We thank you in advance, and we thank all those people, listed below, who have already donated.

With wishes for a happy, free, and just New Year, Andr*a for the IAS ----------------------------------------------------------- Please Donate to the IAS ----------------------------------------------------------- For nearly a decade, the IAS has worked to support the development of the theoretical tools necessary for critiquing systems of domination and envisioning alternatives to them. At a time when genuinely radical movements in North America are at low ebb, we believe that it is more important than ever to create opportunities for anti-authoritarians to analyze contemporary challenges and strategies, and reflect critically on movement practices and dilemmas. Through our grant program and other efforts, the IAS supports and sustains forums in which such theoretical work is possible, and contributes to nurturing a global community of anarchist scholars and public intellectuals.

Over the past ten years, the IAS has funded over fifty projects by authors and translators from countries around the world, including Argentina, Canada, Germany, South Africa, the Czech Republic, and the United States. We have funded movement research, anthologies, translations, historical studies, online publications, and books that serve as organizing tools--and others that read like pirates' tales. Last winter, the IAS modified its grant program to fund and provide editorial as well as publishing assistance to writers and translators of essay-length works only.

The IAS has been able to offer this unique and crucial support thanks to the generosity of our comrades and allies around the world, and we are asking for your assistance once again. We are trying to raise $15,000 by January 2006 in order to continue to award grants to radical writers, develop our publishing efforts, and support our other projects.

Your donation will help the IAS to: * Award US$2,000 in grants to writers and translators of essay-length works that treat themes of importance to the development of anarchist theory and practice. * Provide editorial and publishing assistance to the essay writers and translators we fund. Many of the completed essays will be published in Perspectives on Anarchist Theory or in a new books series to be published in collaboration with AK Press. * Sponsor the annual Renewing the Anarchist Tradition conference, a scholarly space in which to reexamine and reinvigorate the social and political tradition of anarchism. * Publish Perspectives on Anarchist Theory, our biannual journal for theoretical debates and projects reflective of a diversity of anti-authoritarian tendencies. * Coordinate our new Speakers Bureau.

As an _expression of our appreciation for your support, we are offering book gifts ( http://www.anarchist-studies.org/support/books to IAS donors who reside in the United States or Canada, thanks to the good people at Raven Books in Boston, Massachusetts. IAS donors who give US$25 or more are entitled to receive at least one great book from their collection. All donors will receive an annual subscription to Perspectives on Anarchist Theory.

You can donate online, by following the link below. We also accept donations by mail. Please print the donation form from our Web site, and mail it with your contribution to:

Institute for Anarchist Studies PO Box 1664 Peter Stuyvesant Station New York, NY 10009 USA

If you know of other friends, comrades, or groups who might also be interested in supporting the work of the IAS, please feel free to send them this appeal or pass along their name and e-mail address to us.

Please donate today!: http://www.anarchist-studies.org/support/donate ----------------------------------------------------------- Thank You IAS Donors! ----------------------------------------------------------- We gratefully acknowledge the groups and individuals who have already contributed to the IAS's 2005 fund-raising campaign. Because of them, we are able to continue supporting the development of radical scholarship.

Each year, the IAS awards a total of $2,000 in grants to writers and translators of essay-length work. Grant awards range from $250 to $500. Essay-length work is considered to be approximately 20-50 pages (10,000-25,000 words). Completed essays are considered for publication in the IAS journal Perspectives on Anarchist Theory or as part of a small books series in collaboration with AK Press.

Grant recipients will be expected to complete their project within six months of receiving the award.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to complete the application form online. If you are unable to apply online, please write us to request a paper copy of the application, or download and print the application form. Requests and completed applications should be mailed to:

Institute for Anarchist Studies PO Box 1664, Peter Stuyvesant Station New York, NY 10009 USA

Prospective applicants are welcome to contact us with questions about the application process at info at anarchist-studies.org, after taking a look at the Frequently Asked Questions ( http://www.anarchist-studies.org/grants/faq page on the IAS Web site.

Apply Online: http://apply.anarchist-studies.org/ ----------------------------------------------------------- Renewing the Anarchist Tradition 2006 ----------------------------------------------------------- The seventh annual Renewing the Anarchist Tradition conference (RAT) will take place from midday Friday, September 29 to midday Sunday, October 1, 2006.

The RAT conference, sponsored by the IAS, aims to provide a scholarly space in which to both reexamine and reinvigorate the social and political tradition of anarchism.

RAT is meant as one contribution to the project of developing a more rigorous as well as contemporary theoretical framework for anarchism, and to assist in nurturing new generations of anti-authoritarian public intellectuals. Thus, as opposed to conferences that attempt to create anarchist organizations, statements of purpose, or focus on "lifestyle anarchism" or how-to workshops, RAT brings together anarchist and libertarian left scholars, activists, educators, writers, organizers, students, and others to explore how we make sense of our own tradition; how we understand anarchism in the context of our lives, movements, and present-day social conditions; and how the conceptual tools that the anarchist tradition provides can and need to be rethought.

Alongside a participatory weekend of presentations, panels, and debates in a supportive atmosphere, the beautiful rural Vermont setting affords the opportunity to meet other anarchists and radicals, and hopefully enjoy the fall foliage. RAT also includes a mini-bookfair, free literature tables, and film screenings.

More details about the 2006 conference will be published on the RAT Web site soon.
