Except that the modern notions _evolved out_ of ancient notions, mediated by the middle ages and moderns. How many English words are Anglified Latin translations of Aristotle's terminology? Essence, actuality, potentiality, ideal, etc. etc. etc. A huge number. For instance IIRC correctly the Romans had such problems translating Aristotle that they whipped up the neologism "esse" to render "to on" (or was it "to einai"?), whence the English "essence."
