A comment in Le Monde added that "Japanese women have much less a tendency to give birth outside of marriage than French women" which, Le Monde claimed, explained most of the birth rate difference between the 2 countries.
The fact is that France very recently change laws that made a difference between children born from a married couple and children born from non married people because the balance between the two was tilting in favor of non married couples.
In Japan it is still extremely common to rush into marrying if a sexual relationship ends up with a fetus. There is a whole range of social discriminations for families that are not registered under the obsolete still male centered family registration system...
