Pak's Ajoka performs in J&K

Jammu, January 31, 2005

A Pakistan theatre group is performing for the first time in Kashmir since the partition of the subcontinent in 1947.

The Pakistani theatre group Ajoka, which has been invited by the J&K government, performed its famous play "Bullah" in Jammu, the winter capital of the state, on Sunday (January 30).

"Bullah” tells the life story of Baba Bulleh Shah, the Punjabi Sufi poet revered equally by the Indians and Pakistanis for his message of love, peace and justice.

State's deputy chief minister Mangat Ram Sharma was among others who watched the play, which was well received by the audience.

"It's really a very emotional moment for all of here in J&K and it shows that there is no distinction, no barrier between the people of India and Pakistan and this play is a testimony, it is being received very well," said Ranjeet Kalra.

The real spirit behind Ajoka, Madeeha Gauhar, said the cultural exchanges between the arch-rivals would bring the people closer.

"It's very nice, a wonderful experience the way the audience responded, appreciated each and every point, watched the play quietly and with keen interest and the way they appreciated the artists' performance," she said.

Tension persists with India over Kashmir and a nuclear arms race began after 'Pokhran nuclear explosions', though CBMs are in full swing.
