Yeah, I was impressed by the number of students putting up joke complaints or complaints about conservative professors at the Horowitz site. noindoctrination.com wouldn't accept my description of my economics 101 class. Anyway, I suspect that around the country, social studies teachers are having their students write pro and con opinions on this matter this week, and that they aren't all coming down on the side represented on the radio.
With Ann Coulter's second article this week, which still had a questionable title but not as much racial slur as the first one, she is actually wrong about this idea that people at that time didn't understand what infectious diseases before 100 years later (after 1837). The smallpox vaccine was invented in the late 1700s by Edward Jenner. You've probably heard the description of how he observed that milkmaids weren't watching smallpox which was devastating european cities before then. But they quickly got a vaccination program going and this was a big reason why europeans were so successful in moving west, and weren't dying in similar numbers as indians. Canada offered vaccinations to first nations and so they didn't die in nearly the same percentages in the north. My parents between them (one in germany during WWII one in christian scientist household, western nebraska) had scarlet fever, polio, mumps, measles, rubella and TB. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=108&ncid=742&e=10&u=/ucac/20050216/cm_ucac/notcrazyhorsejustcrazy http://dermatology.about.com/cs/smallpox/a/smallpoxhx.htm http://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/content/full/161/12/1543
