TASER TO ENTER THE SELF DEFENSE MARKET

Controversial Stun Device May No Longer Be Limited To Law Enforcement by Dave Rose and Nina Sparano

2/15/2005

Taser guns could be hitting the streets in a whole new way.

And the shocking news is they are about to enter the hands of anyone who wants one.

At the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, tasers are used as safer alternative to using lethal firearms. Now the company that makes these tasers is announcing a big push to sell them to the public. <...>

They say the five second taser hit seems like an eternity. Typically the body locks up, muscles become rigid and the person hit with the taser is unable to move.

Now Taser International, the company that makes the tasers for law enforcement want wants to sell you a taser for self defense. El Paso County Deputies say, "we would never deny anyone the right to protect themselves or others."

But not everyone agrees.

The use of tasers is being challenged by rights groups and some argue that it has been at least the indirect cause of death in some cases.

Local experts say if these are to be used by the public training should be required.

A personal taser will cost you anywhere from 4 hundred to one thousand dollars. <...>
