Ah, Narayan! What to say except that he's one of the best writers I've ever read. I wasn't so crazy about his short stories, but his novels are amazing. He makes a lot of the western novel good guy/bad guy, wrong choice/right choice type stuff look pretty silly....which it is. I read "The Painter of Sings," "The Vendor of Sweets," and "The Bachelor of Arts" and am looking forward to the other dozen novels.

I still can't stand Naipaul though. Ugh.
