Use of condoms un-Islamic: Pak leader

PTI

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's hardline cleric and Leader of the Opposition, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has said he is opposed to the use of condoms in the name of safe sex and controlling population as he considers it "un-Islamic."

The use of condoms has encouraged unmarried young people to have sex, he was quoted as saying in Lahore.

Rehman, also the leader of the Islamist alliance Muttahida Majlis-e Amal (MMA), made the comments during a meeting with Commonwealth Medical Trust (CMT) Director Marianne Haslegrave on Tuesday.

He, however, welcomed the measures taken by the CMT in promoting a reproductive health system in Pakistan but expressed reservations about its policies, which, he said, were "not in line with the Islamic religion and culture."

He urged the CMT to adopt policies in line with local culture and religion.
