Easy. When there is nothing compelling in either party, why not vote (if you vote at all) on whatever principle is most personally entertaining? They vote on the same grounds that I make consumption decisions -- whimsically.
And of course only a mass extra-electoral explosion can move the political parties to generate compelling issues.
