Yuppies are indeed high-church mammon worshipers and have nothing to do with
evangelism, but I've always thought the military's deepest appeal for the
professionals in it *is* its proto-socialistic nature. A hierarchical
killing machine is undeniably not true socialism, but the military does
offer a large dose of one-for-all-and-all-for-one that is missing from most
US lifestyles, plus all those pension and healthcare benefits. I suspect
many in the US military are closet socialists.
