But it does deliver them peace of mind. They have chosen to lead suburban, middle class lives. They know that to do so requires them to benefit at the expense of exploited workers, but their desires/ ambitions are too strong to be ignored. So they turn to religion so that they can view themselves as "good people."
Doug asked the question why if a majority of Americans were anti-war, did so many vote for Bush. Same phenomenon. People are anti-war in principle to live with themselves, but will vote for a pro-war President as a pragmatic response to keep their desires being fulfilled (which in large part is the history of humankind).
