I don't think the article Doug posted was kvetching.
Sontag was the Doyenne of the Trite and Middlebrow. The reason she didn't come out was she knew that her middlebrow readers couldn't deal with he being queer. She was compromised both sexually and intellectually.
You want to read a great essayist/novelist? Get the Library of America's volume of James Baldwin's Collected Essays. Baldwin was fierce, queer and proud. Also a much better writer. Compare his last masterpiece "Just Above My Head" with Sontag's final work -- the almost unreadable "In America."
