Rubbish, Charles. I needn't qualify every statement that Stalin (or whoever) committed a crime with a counterbalancing praise for his achievements or an attack on capitalism, feudalism, whatever. (You know, fellow counsel, that it's no defense to say that your co-defendants were even worse.) The fact is that the plannned famine in the Ukraine, the "liquidation of the kulaks as a class," and the creation of a police state in the USSR were not only crimes against humanity, they were crimes against socialism. Of course just being a crime against humanity is bad enough, but if you ever wonder why socialism is in poor repute, think on these proper names: Lubyanka, Kolyma, Yagoda, Yezhov, Beria.
