Great post, Dwayne. But to make the analogy work, you would have to add that the gang in question is not only tyrannizing its own neighborhood, but also carrying on its gang-banging in adjacent neighborhoods (in this case, other countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus) and actually attempting to expand its turf into them.
Central Asians I know (like the sexy Uzbek waitress at my local cafe) hate Talibs and want them killed. It's a common refrain that "in the Soviet Union, at least there were no f#@$ing Wahabbis!"
