Hmm, sounds like you're suffering from a case of advanced capitalism. I prescribe an immediate change of regime to socialism.

Having gained some familiarity with the pointy end of the system, I recognize that USers increasingly face a choice between being worked to death or having no work at all. I see this as the bleakest aspect of this society, apart from being involved in an endless pointless war.
