But why is that? Surely it must be because these forms of oppression

More loosely, any form of oppression (using a divide and conquer
strategy) strengthens the ruling class because it divides those ruled by
race, gender, what have you. Racism, sexism, etc., are not particular to
capitalism, but they divide the working class.
Fighting these forms of oppression will not end capitalism, but they will diminish the power of the rulers to undermine the solidarity of the working class.
