After the resignation of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, co-presidents Karl Rove and Dick Cheney met to discuss who should replace her:

"How about John?"

"Ashcroft? no... he's really good, but he's been sick. He's too old. Besides, we need a woman to replace a woman."

"Yeah, I like how we used the affirmative action ploy to sand-bag those liberals with Clarence ... Okay, how about Phyllis or Anita?"

"No law degrees, but that's not the issue. The problem is that Schlaffly and Bryant are too old. We need someone who will shape the court for generations, like Clarence."

"I've got it! Ann Coulter."

"Yes -- and she's quite cute, despite that Adam's apple."

(18 1/2 minute gap in the tape) -- Jim Devine "Segui il tuo corso, e lascia dir le genti." (Go your own way and let people talk.) -- Karl, paraphrasing Dante.
