>After the resignation of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, co-presidents
>Karl Rove and Dick Cheney met to discuss who should replace her:
>
>"How about John?"
>
>"Ashcroft? no... he's really good, but he's been sick. He's too
>old. Besides, we need a woman to replace a woman."
>
>"Yeah, I like how we used the affirmative action ploy to sand-bag
>those liberals with Clarence ... Okay, how about Phyllis or Anita?"
>
>"No law degrees, but that's not the issue. The problem is that
>Schlaffly and Bryant are too old. We need someone who will shape the
>court for generations, like Clarence."

William H. Rehnquist, afflicted with thyroid cancer, missed "44 oral arguments before the court in late 2004 and early 2005," ("William Rehnquist, a Biography," Justice News Daily, 2005) and is unlikely to last very long; and John Paul Stevens, who had prostate cancer, is 85 years old, still vigorous though he appears to be. Will Bush, one lucky SOB, hit another trifecta (cf. <http://montages.blogspot.com/2005/07/sandra-day-oconnor-resigns-will-bush.html>)? -- Yoshie
