It's cheap, and instructions for making it are easily available. The wide open spaces are perfect for little meth labs, privacy, and the stench of cooking it. Labs can be very mobile, and there isn't the dependancy on a "cartel" or importer that there is with other drugs.

I've had the misfortune of having to deal with family members who were (and remain) meth-heads and meth manufacturers, and I work with people trying to recover from their addiction to meth. I cannot describe in strong enough words the long term damage - physically, mentally and functionally - this concoction wreaks on those beholden to it.
