I've taken some time off from other things to look at at my emails, and am
struck by the size and heat of this thread. The anarchists were a serious
force in the working class movement at the turn of the last century, and had
to be confronted ideologically. The Spanish anarchist movement in the civil
war was also formidable. But small groups of students and street people
acting out in North America and Europe? The anarchists are a spectacle for
the media and their libertarian theories continue to resonate with romantic
intellectuals, but they no longer represent anything of real significance in
Western political life. I doubt their theatre either attracts or drives
people away from the left. These decisions have deeper roots.
