Everyone seems to be speculating on the motives of "Al Qaeda"
and the various groups and individuals committing barbarous
crimes and issuing incoherent statements under that label.
But nobody seems to recognize that "terrorist" groups have
always been infiltrated and manipulated by state-police
provocateurs (remember "The Secret Agent" anyone?), and
that a multitude of Western, Israeli, and Arab "Intelligence
Services" possess the human and financial resources to do
this on any scale they choose.

And so I make this humble suggestion:  whatever the individual
psychopathic or revenge-seeking motivations of various dead
"Islamic Terrorists,"  couldn't it be that, among the intellectual
authors of these atrocities, some at least definitely intend the
actual political effect of their actions--namely to give the
greatest political help to the most fascistic elements among
the Western, Israeli, and Arab establishments and to give
the greatest possible impulse to the transformation of liberal
bourgeois dictatorships into de facto police states?
