Aslan Maskhadov has been killed. How was he connected to the war in Chechnya?

That depends who you ask. In Moscow’s eyes, he was a top terrorist. For many Chechens, on the other hand, he was a symbol of their independence movement.

--- What a lame question. That's like asking "how was Hitler connected to WWII?" But anyway--

Hardy-har-har. How many Chechens is "many"? Maskhadov's teip? (I doubt the writer of this piece has ever heard the word "teip.") Maskhadov was the guy who presided over an absolutely criminalized "country" specializing in slavery and kidnapping as its main economy, allowed the second Chechen war to take place by not following Kremlin ultimatums to extradite Basaev and Khattab after their invasion(s) of Dagestan, and was serially incapable of admitting to his mistakes. He died in ignominy in Chechnya to the great relief of most Chechens, and to the infinite relief of almost all Ossetians, Ingush, and Dagestanis.

Maskhadov had his chance for a legacy. He blew it time after time. A more digraceful exit from the scene for a teip leader can hardly be imagined.

Nu, zayats, pogodi!
