There was a point in US history where a belief in things like, oh, equal rights for blacks would have "alienated 85% of supporters right off the bat," no?

So, yeah, basically, one's beliefs shouldn't necessarily pander to the majority, esp. if what the majority believes is wrong. Have to stand up for something, somewhere, regardless of its popularity, you know? =)
