Apparently public awareness has increased in the last 50 years. Rather more than that had never heard of McCarthy at the time of the Army/M hearings. I really doubt that as many as 75% of the public knows of Karl Rove. I would have guessed around 40%. There was no question that checked awareness of the name; the name was mentioned in the first question. I doubt that many hand ever heard the name before the polster asked a question, which included the name; after that respondents were responding to information the questions provided, not reporting on the basis of prior information.
