The unions don't need to get "smarter" in their organizing, they just need to do *more* organizing. And spend less money on million dollar headquarters buildings in Washington, DC. ANnd work less with management. And organize workers who want to be in a union, but are rejected by unions because their work situation falls outside of traditional union classifications about work (i.e. temp and casual workers).
In other words, more basic organizing stuff and a flattening of structures.
In other words, emulate something like the IWW. Put power in the hands of the workers and take the suites away from the union suits.
I'm trying to come up with a witty combination of "teach a man to fish" and a sports metaphor about basic skills winning ball games, but it ain't coming together for me right now.
