LONDON, June 6 (newratings.com) – India and Pakistan have begun talks on Sunday regarding the building of a $4 billion natural gas pipeline originating in Iran. The project is expected to fulfill the natural gas requirements of the two South Asian countries.
The 2,775-kilometre pipeline will run through Pakistan and is expected to be completed by 2009. The project has been stalled for the past few years due to the strained relations between the two South Asian neighbours. According to Bloomberg News, the pipeline will allow the flow of 150 million cubic meters of gas on a daily basis. About a third of this gas will be bought by Pakistan, with the rest likely to be consumed by India. India's oil minister, Mani Shanker Aiyar, is currently visiting Pakistan to discuss the details of the project, the transit fees and the price likely to be paid for the gas flowing through the pipeline.
