Just started today. Great read. Vietnam Vet, "conservative Catholic," hard on the neo-cons. he contributed to the neo-con journals in the 90's, and severed ties, come the War), has read widely in the Old and New Left analyses of US Empire, and shares some of their pov, but, like some of the better writers against the war, is a "Realist, " in IR terms.
Much more sophisticated on the roots of neo-conservative ideology, than most left journo writing, which rarely rises above caricature. The chapter which most reflects his "conservative Catholicism, " on the Neo-Con revulsion at the 60's counter-culture, is esp. good.
Another recommendation, also just released Gary Dorrien, "Imperial Designs: Neoconservatism and the New Pax Americana." Extensive footnotes reflect deep reading in the neo-con lit.
