But, Jeffrey, us cadre in the NAM and DSOC locals in Santa Cruz, who made no secret of our affilations, both to friends, allies and enemies (sometimes, we met in the house of John Laird, later the first gay Mayor of Santa Cruz, and after that in the Ca. state legislature), were correctly perceived by the Right-wing as socialists. Bruce Van Allen, who was elected with Mike R., one time at a NAM meeting, even said in a lefter than thou moment, "You might be a democratic socialist, but, I'm a democratic communist." (And a porn star, he showed us the stills once!)
