Imo, this eclecticism goes back to Tim Leary, Art Kleps, J.J. Altizer and Robert Heinlein. Yeah there's the older Theosophy movement stuff, but for the boomers -and I think that's who we're talking about here- the combination of Vatican II opening up stuff and all the acid really created a new kind of punch bowl. Ian Gillan as Jesus on Jesus Christ Superstar might just be the musical highpoint :-) of the entire aesthetics that accompanied the utter explosion of religious experiences that are still with us.
