I don't think this is so in the sense of "determinism" I mentioned. There is debate about "genetic determinism," but not about "determinism" in the sense given the idea by scientific materialism itself. In the case of Gould, for instance, my recollection is that he explicitly endorses the kind of "materialism" that excludes any role for self-determination and final causation ("causes" allowed for in the ideas of a "will proper" and a "universal will"). See, for instance, "Darwin's Delay" in Ever Since Darwin.
