Well, try cashing out the notion of "all religious history is the history of class struggle" in an interesting (i.e. non-trivial) and plausible fashion. I don't think it's possible.

Many people desperately yearn to believe that they'll continue to exist even after their bodies expire. They also yearn for the sort of ultimate explanations of the origins and order of the universe that science can't provide. Hence many people are all too credulous of the balderdash we call "religion."
