What would it take for it to have been anti-capitalist then? People were not going around screaming "All Power to the Soviets" in it, but it certainly was critical of certain aspects of contemporary capitalism, ie sacrificing your life to capital.

I dont recall seeing people screaming socialist slogans in De Sica's "Bicycle Thief" or his "Miracle in Milan" but those are certainly anti-capitalist movies (we just happen to know the director's politics).

It was not the Greatest movie ever, but certainly much much better than the standard fare coming from Hollywood.
