[lbo-talk] BLS hours question

Some time ago someone posed a question to this list pertaining to the number of hours and wages reported by the BLS data. I forwarded that question to my contact in the Bureau - here is their response.

<<Each establishment participating in the CES sample sends total hours for the entire establishment, including overtime, from their payroll records. No distinction is made between hourly and salaried workers. The establishment also sends gross pay for the establishment. In other words, total hour and wage data for the establishment are reported--not data for individual workers. BLS then uses this sample data to calculate estimates of gross hours and earnings by industry; average hours and earnings are derived from these gross estimates.>>

It is also my understanding that their surveys of hours worked target mainly the wage workers but not supervisory personnel, but some state Labor Market Information offices (e.g. MN) may also attempt to cover supervisory personnel as well - nut that may have changed recently.

It is a non-trivial issue for between-industry comparison of wages, because different uses of part timers shows as lower average wages.

I hope this is useful.
