I took a linguistics class at UC Berkeley about 20 years ago and had
this problem: my Chinese TA was convinced that I had the definitions of
"syntax" and "semantics" backwards ... I think I convinced him that I
knew a thing or two about these words, but he seemed suspicious of me
for the rest of the week until I dropped the class.
