Exhaustively detailed.I made it half way through.Worked in Afghanistan for the UN in the 90's.

Reaping the Whirlwind: The Taliban Movement in Afghanistan By Michael Griffin Pluto Press. http://www.haymarketbooks.org/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=Haymarket&Product_Code=GIRTW&Category_Code=GI http://www.marxist.com/Asia/taliban_review.html
>...The book provides an interesting quote from Najibullah, the leader
of the PDPA, overthrown by the Islamic fundamentalists: "If fundamentalism comes to Afghanistan, war will continue for many years. Afghanistan will turn into a centre of world smuggling for narcotic drugs. Afghanistan will be turned into a centre for terrorism." (11.3.92) How true those word sound now!

Jon Lee Anderson of The New Yorker, in his book, focusing on Massoud, the martyred Northern Alliance leader killed by al-Q operatives two days before 9-11, has much on the Taliban, in a more journalistic vein.
