Some years ago we useds a Polish baby-shitting service on the North Shore of Chicago. One of the sitters, a lovely young woman named Magda, introduced herself, we asked where she was from. Poland, she said. Yes, we asked, but where in Poland. She stammered, blushed, looked away, said, . . . Auschwitz. Oh well, we said, can't help where you are from. She was a wonderful sitter. But she said Auschwitz, not Oswiecim. jks
