Communists win 46.1% in Moldova parliamentary elections CHISINAU. March 7 (Interfax) - The Communist Party has won 46.1% of the votes in Moldova's parliamentary elections, the Central Elections Commission announced on Monday after processing 100% of the ballots.
The commission said the communists had been supported by 711,000 voters.
The Democratic Moldova election coalition gained 438,900 votes (29.41%.) and is in second place.
The Popular Christian-Democratic Party is in third place, winning 133,800 votes (9.7%).
In accordance with election legislation, the communists will have 56-57 seats in the 101-seat parliament.
In 2000, the opposition Communist Party mustered 50.07% of the vote, winning 71 of the 101 parliamentary seats and thus formed the government. A party needs 52 parliamentary mandates to form a government and parliament's leadership.
A party needs at least 61 votes for its nominee to be elected president. Therefore, the communists will have to strike a deal with the opposition to draw enough votes to elect its nominee.
Nu, zayats, pogodi!
